Last week Jen and Leah talked about the importance of setting boundaries in your life. Well, just like peanut butter needs jelly, Boundaries need Standards. This week Jan and Leah introduce the coaching concept of Raising Your Standards. Whereas boundaries are what others can no longer do to you, standards are the behaviors that YOU hold yourself accountable to. The higher your standards the better your life!

One way to get very clear on what types of standards you find important, is to identify and write down a list 10 people that you admire. And then next to person’s name, identify the qualities that you admire about that person. Those qualities are likely to be the standards that you identify with and want to build your life around. Everyone has their own unique set of standards. One standard you might have is that you do not gossip or hang around negative people. Once you identify that standard, you may find you have to make some life changes in order to meet that standard. For example, you may need to communicate this standard to family and friends that are negative or gossip.

I like to compare raising standards with climbing a ladder. Each step that you take up to the next rung is elevating you higher and higher to your destination! As you continue to climb upwards, you keep focusing on what is ahead of you….you don’t continually turn around to look down to see where you have been.

So, think about it. What are your current standards? Could they use some raising?
